Designing the functional skills booklet to support the teaching of the English language to disadvantaged groups who haven't achieved their English GCSE.
M Shed's functional skills program will be one of the first free programs run by a museum teaching adults and young adults the English language to help them achieve a GCSE equivalent. M Shed is known to be the Museum of the Bristolian people, which is why I designed the functional skills booklet with an essence of the industrial M Shed building with strong lines, angles, and the iconic cranes.
Understanding that the target audience may face challenges such as learning disabilities like dyslexia, I made deliberate design choices to ensure accessibility. Clear, legible fonts were selected to enhance readability for all users, and simple, straightforward language was employed to ensure comprehension. These choices were made to be effective on both white and coloured paper, catering to diverse learner needs.
The functional skills program aims to welcome everyone, especially those who have found education challenging, to the museum and encourage learning at all ages. By bringing more diversity to the museum, we allow participants to access a wealth of education, heritage, and culture, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
